It might have been feared that the Pavillon Rouge 2002 would be affected by the lower quality of the Merlot grapes compared with the Cabernet Sauvignon. It turned out not to be the case, thanks to the third wine, which enabled us to discard the less good batches of Merlot.
It is a classic, quite powerful wine, with some austerity which will repay laying down a few years before drinking.
The quite adverse weather conditions during the period of flowering resulted in severe millerandage in the old Merlot plots.
The summer was cool and relatively humid, especially during August. Fortunately however, as from September, hot, dry and sunny weather set in until the end of the harvest. (Picking began on September 30th)
